web service

  • a software system designed to support interoperable machine-to-machine interaction over a network
  • why?
    • When all major platforms could access the Web using Web browsers, different platforms couldn’t interact. For these platforms to work together, Web-applications were developed.
    • Web-applications are simply applications that run on the web. These are built around the Web browser standards and can be used by any browser on any platform.

  1. That definition is broader than a web service. A web service usually means a RESTful service; i.e., one that uses the HTTP primitives and simple URLs for its operations. However, a web service can mean other services built on a web server.

Things such as RMI, CORBA, or databases are network services (SOA) as described above, but they are not web services.
